2025 Winter Games Update

The Police Sport Winter Games are being held in Queenstown on August 27th to 29th 2025 are now two and a half months away. 

This year our friends at FENZ have also been asked to join in the fun.

Team and individual registrations are now being taken. 

The way to enter is to go to the website – www.policesport.org,nz.  Login and head to the Winter Games section. 

There are no entry fee’s other than for Golf and Ski/Snowboarding. 

Should you be an individual without a team and wanting to compete in a team game, please contact the team co-ordinator and they will endeavour to find a team for you.

ALL ENTRIES CLOSE FRIDAY 6th AUGUST 2025

There are informal nightly activities planned and there will be a designated venue where you will be able to attend and catch up with mates and share an ale or two.

Mihi Whakatau

The Mihi Whakatau welcome speech will be held at the Queenstown Event Centre at 7.30am on Wednesday 27th August 2025.  All welcome.

 Rugby

To date we have had 5 Police men’s rugby teams and one FENZ team indicating that they will be attending as well a Police women’s team who will take on two invitational teams. 

Each men’s team will play 1 game per day at the Queenstown Event Centre.  The games will start at around 10am, 12noon and 2pm each day. 

The women’s team will play invitational teams on the Wednesday and Friday.  This includes the Cromwell Women’s team at Arrowtown and the Southland Hinds at the Event Centre.  Times for these games are yet to be confirmed.

If there are any qualified referee’s from within the Police who are wanting to referee some games, please get in touch with Phil.

 Netball

To date we have had numerous teams indicating that they will be attending.

Each team will play 2-3 games per day with the first games starting around 8am and going through till about 4pm on the Wednesday 27th & about 4/6pm on Thursday 28th at the Queenstown Event Centre. 

A reserve day has been set for Fri 29th August if there are more teams than expected.

The competition grades are Open, Social and mixed.

 Football

To date we have 5 teams who have indicated that they are intending to be coming.

Each team will likely play 2 games per day with the first games starting around 10.30am and the later games at 12 or 1pm at the Queenstown Event Centre.

As in previous years, the teams are to be mixed.

 Volleyball

Volleyball has been scheduled for late afternoon on Wednesday 27th and Late afternoon/evening on Thursday 28th August at the Queenstown Event Centre. 

Depending on the number of teams and games, we have a reserve day on Friday 29th August.

As in previous years, the teams are to be mixed.

 Depending on the number of teams entered, it will either work on a pool or round robin draw. 

Day one has been scheduled for 4 to 6pm. 

Day two will run from 4/6pm till 9pm. 

A reserve day has been set for Friday.

 Skiing and Snow Boarding

The competition will cater for skiers and boarders of all ages and abilities. 

There will be two days of competition at the Cardrona Skifield. 

This will include a GS type race for ski and snowboard on Wednesday 27th and a boarder/skier X on Thursday 28th.

 Friday 29th will be a reserve weather day.

There is the possibility for the Boarders to run their own peer judged slope style.

There is an entry cost of $60 due to the large cost to hire the racecourses and race officials.

Entrants will need to pay for their daily lift passes, but Cardrona Ski field have discounted these to $135 per day.

 Cross Country Running

The Cross-Country Running Race is to be held on Wednesday 27th of August and it will be around the spectacular Moke Lake.    This is 20 minutes from Queenstown.

This 6km loop track is a short, undulating track through alpine grassland which is surrounded by mountains and goes right around the lake. 

The lake is protected from winds in the area and the lake often provides mirror-like reflections of the surrounding mountains.

Starting from the Moke lake campground, runners will complete a clockwise lap of the lake, finishing back at the campground. 

Race will be on Wednesday 27th August, start time 1300

Categories- Male, female and Clydesdale. Age groups will depend on entries.

National titles up for grabs!

Should the road to Moke Lake be inaccessible, an alternate route (Likely to be Lake Hayes) will be used.

 Mountain Biking

This year the mountain biking XC will be held at the 5 mile MTB tracks on Thursday the 28th of August – Start time to be confirmed.

This will be a multi lap course of grade 2-3 single track, around 15-20km.  Men’s, Women’s and E-bike categories will be available.

If there is interest, an Enduro event can be added on after the XC on the 28th.

New this year will be an Après Velo ride on Friday 29 August – riders will meet at the band rotunda in the Queenstown Gardens and depart at 0930 for a leisurely ride around the Queenstown trails to Ayrburn for lunch via the Lower Shotover and Twin river trails.

After lunch riders will ride back through back to the Lower Shotover via Dalefield and then either back to town through Frankton or for a longer ride, through Tuckers Beach to Arthurs point.

This will be a social ride to enjoy some fantastic trails, good company and better food!

Total distance will be an undulating 60-80km.

A donation of $10 per rider is sought (100% of this entry fee will go to the Queenstown Trails Trust)

 Squash

The Squash Tournament is being held at the Queenstown Squash Club over the 3 days (Depending on numbers). 

The squash courts are in the middle of downtown Queenstown, next to the Wakatipu Rugby Club.

This will cater to all grades and skill levels for both men and women.

 Brazilian Jujitsu

This is the first time Police Sport have been involved in a Brazilian Jujitsu event. 

This event is going to be held at the Queenstown Event Centre on Friday 29th August and is being run by the Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jujitsu Club. 

The event is likely to start around 8am and will run through to completion.

Competitors will be matched in bouts depending on gender, belt/experience and weight.

 Golf

The competition is going to be held at the Arrowtown Golf Course and there will be 18 holes played on Thursday 28th & Friday 29th August. 

Golfers with and without handicaps are welcome to enter.

The competition will be using the Stableford scoring system.

Most of the team sports are being played at the Queenstown Event Centre in Frankton (6km from downtown Queenstown) but I would recommend that you stay in Queenstown for the nightlife.

Public Buses

There are regular buses between Frankton (Event Centre location) and Queenstown if required. 

They depart every 15 mins from 6am to midnight and cost $2.
